Inspired by Dr. Seuss’s The Sneetches, written out of his opposition to antisemitism and prejudice, Star Bellies brings the story’s underlying history to the surface. Borrowing Seuss’s bright colors and playful composition while using my own figures, I transformed the stars into Stars of David, making explicit the antisemitism at the roots of the allegory. The cheerful, almost childlike imagery deliberately contrasts with the darker history beneath it.
