At the 2024 Academy Awards, celebrities wore red-hand pins in support of a ceasefire in Gaza. Red Pins at the Oscarsconfronts the disturbing historical resonance of that imagery: the blood-red hands associated with the 2000 Ramallah lynching of two Israeli reservists. The painting questions the ease with which powerful cultural figures can embrace political symbols without understanding, or acknowledging, the history those symbols may evoke.
