I painted this during a moment when the sight of troops in Washington felt both understandable and deeply unsettling—the kind of image that makes ordinary life suddenly look anything but ordinary. Rather than taking a political side, the painting captures that uneasiness: the strange coexistence of military presence, uncertainty and a mother simply going about her day.
